Air Source Heat Pump Installation Plymouth

When Daikin wanted a real installation to build a national case study around, they chose Alan Carruthers here in Plymouth. When architects need to understand how heat pumps actually work in a building, Daikin bring Alan in to teach them. When other heating firms take on heat pump work, some of them send their own engineers to him for training.

That is who turns up when you book air source heat pump installation in Plymouth with HPE Airflow SW Ltd. Not a salesman, and not a subcontractor. The installer other installers learn from.

Air Source Heat Pump Installation

An air source heat pump takes warmth out of the outside air and moves it into your home, even in the middle of a Devon winter. It runs your radiators, your underfloor heating and your hot water, and it does it for a fraction of the energy a gas boiler needs.

Our air source heat pump installation in Plymouth covers the whole job from first visit to final commissioning. A free survey at your property, no charge and no pressure. A proper room by room heat loss calculation, so the unit is sized to your house and not guessed at. System design, including radiator sizing and hot water storage. Supply and installation of the heat pump, all the pipework and all the electrical work, done in house. Then commissioning, and a walk through of the controls so you know how to run it.

Most domestic installations take between two and five days depending on the size of the property.

Where we install air source heat pumps. Across Plymouth and out into the surrounding towns and villages, including Plympton, Ivybridge and Tavistock. Properties off the mains gas grid usually see the strongest case for converting.

The installer that other installers learn from

Most heating firms will tell you they are approved by a manufacturer. Very few get asked to be the case study.

Alan Carruthers has been working with Daikin since 2008 and is a Daikin certified installer, reference CI35. Daikin published a case study on one of his installations, at a 1980s semi detached house in Plymouth. Mr and Mrs Willis had lived there more than twenty years with an open vented gas boiler, tanks in the loft and a cylinder taking up a bedroom cupboard.

Alan carried out a full survey, sized the system for the heating and cooling the house actually needed, and worked out the electrical supply for every unit. The consumer unit was upgraded from three way to five way with full RCD protection so it could carry the new system alongside the family’s EV charger, work that a heating engineer without electrical qualifications has to hand to somebody else. The whole job took a few days, with the household never left without hot water while the old boiler and tanks came out.

The results, in the homeowner’s own words: gas use down to almost nothing, better hot water pressure, a quieter and more responsive system, and savings of nearly £50 a month against the same period the year before. “Alan and his team were excellent, tidy, thoughtful and very professional.”

Daikin do not only send Alan work. They send him people to teach. He is brought in to train other firms’ engineers, and to train architects so the buildings they design suit the technology going into them. He holds the heat pump installer qualification and the design module, and has spent fifteen of his twenty plus years in the trade on heat pumps.

Almost every heat pump customer we work with gets the government grant, currently £7,500. You do not have to deal with any of it. We handle the paperwork, the heat loss calculations and the application on your behalf, and the quote arrives with the grant already taken off. Read the full page.

An air to water heat pump feeds your existing wet system, so radiators, underfloor heating and the hot water cylinder all run from it. For most Plymouth homes coming off a gas or oil boiler this is the type we fit. We will tell you honestly which radiators need upsizing, and it goes in the quote.

We fit air source heat pumps in Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Plymouth, post war semis and estate housing in Plympton, Plymstock and Ivybridge, new builds and self builds across the South Hams, rural properties around Tavistock, Launceston and Looe coming off oil, and commercial premises including work for Cornwall Council on their buildings.

For the right property, ground source draws heat from buried pipework instead of the air, giving a steadier source through the winter. It needs land and groundworks. Read the full page.

Daikin certified installer, reference CI35. That certification is not a sticker. It means we are trained on the equipment, we can get parts and technical support quickly, and your warranty is protected because the install was done to the manufacturer’s standard. We also install Mitsubishi, Toshiba, Hitachi and Kensa systems where they suit the property better.

A heat pump needs an annual service, the same as a boiler. It keeps the efficiency up, keeps your running costs down, and it keeps the manufacturer’s warranty valid. We service every major make, whether we fitted it or not. Read the full page.

Heat pump not heating, making a noise, or throwing a fault code? We are F-Gas certified for fault finding, re-gassing and repair, with a fast local response across Plymouth and the surrounding area.

If you already have a heat pump that is old, undersized or was never right from the day it went in, we can replace it with a modern high efficiency unit. Grant help may be available depending on your circumstances.

Most heat pump installations need a new hot water cylinder, because a heat pump heats water to a lower temperature than a boiler and needs more storage. We supply, install and service unvented cylinders as part of the job.

Air source is one option. For the right property we also fit ground source heat pumps, and we can advise on underfloor heating, which pairs well with a heat pump because it runs at a lower flow temperature. If a heat pump is not right for your house, we will say so.

A typical domestic air source heat pump installation in Plymouth works out between £4,000 and £5,000 after the grant, depending on the size of the property and how much work the existing system needs. You get a written, itemised quote after the survey. No pressure, and no charge for the visit.
